Four Golden Eagles Earn All-WVIAC Honors
February 27, 2006
After finishing the regular season with a 25-2 overall mark and a 17-1 conference record, the University of Charleston women's basketball team continues to pile up awards and honors. With only 11 players on the roster, UC accumulated four All-WVIAC selections this season, as well as a combined six WVIAC Player of the Week awards.
WVIAC Player of the Year Lisa Lee (6-0, Sr., F, Charleston, WV) was named to the All-WVIAC First Team for the third time in her career. The former Capital High School standout is the first UC women's basketball player to win the WVIAC Player of the Year award since Coach Sherry Winn in 1986. Lee was also a five-time WVIAC Player of the Week selection in 2006. Lee is currently averaging 19.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest and shots 58-percent from the floor, which places her among the nation's leaders. Lee has also scored in double-digits in 26-of-27 contests on the season and is on pace to become the all-time WVIAC scoring leader. Lee became UC's all-time scoring leader in December 2005.
Courtney Thomas (5-8, Jr., G) joins Lee on the All-WVIAC First Team for the first time in her career. The standout guard from Reynoldsburg, OH was an All-WVIAC Second Team selection last season and received an Honorable Mention nod after being named to the WVIAC All-Freshman Team her first season at Charleston. Thomas is currently averaging 13.6 points and 4.2 assists per game. Earlier this season, Thomas was named to the Indiana (PA) Komen Classic All-Tournament First Team. Thomas currently ranks third among WVIAC active scoring leaders with 1,278 points, second among active steal leaders with 255, and third among active assist leaders with 355. Thomas' season-highs include 25 points against Shepherd University on Jan. 21, 2006 and 9 assists against Belmont Abbey on Dec. 14, 2005. Thomas currently ranks fourth in the UC record book in career steals and eighth in career assists.
Charleston's Rachel Pike (6-0, Jr., F, Madison, OH) was named to the All-WVIAC Honorable Mention Team. Pike came out of nowhere this season and earned her first WVIAC Player of the Week award over the holiday break. The Madison, OH native was named to the Komen Classic All-Tournament Second Team to begin the season and has not let up. Consistency has been Pike's strength throughout the season, recording three double-doubles and recording a season-high 10 rebounds in three contests. Pike grabbed four or more rebounds in every game this season and scored double-digits in 17 games. Pike currently ranks seventh in the WVIAC in field-goal percentage and scored a season-high 16 points in back-to-back contests on Jan. 28 and Jan. 30. Pike is currently averaging 10.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Freshman Jihan Williams (6-0, Fr., F, Cleveland, OH) collected her first WVIAC award as she was named to the WVIAC All-Freshman Team. In a reserve role, Williams averaged 6.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Williams is currently ranked among the top 20 in the WVIAC in total rebounding. Following the lead of Lee and Pike, Williams is shooting 50-percent from the floor.
