Senior Rachel Pike dropped in 14 points and the University of Charleston leaned a lot on its younger players Wednesday in claiming a 93-40 victory over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras during its holiday trip to Puerto Rico.
The Golden Eagles, who boosted their record to 5-4, also received 14 points from freshman Chelsea Joseph and 13 from freshman Kaitlyn Arick. Sophomore Jihann Williams added 10 points.
“We let some of our younger players play a lot of minutes,’’ said UC coach Sherry Winn, “and gave our freshmen a lot of minutes. So they got the opportunity to get in and get a feel for things. Our normal players didn’t get a lot of minutes and when they did [play], they tried to feed the ball to everybody else.’’
UC, which held a 45-21 halftime lead, eventually saw 10 players score in all.
“It was good for our freshmen,’’ Winn said, “because they had not been playing well. They got some confidence, got a good feeling about playing and finally played well.’’
UC finishes its island trip with a game against University of Puerto Rico at Cayey.
