Coach Fitzgerald begins her seventh year as assistant coach for the Golden Eagles. Her experiences include graduate assistant positions at Kansas State University and Northeastern State University in Oklahoma where she earned a Masters degree in Education. She has also been assistant coach at Montana State University-Northern and the University of Southern Colorado.

She is a knowledgeable coach who believes that education is life long. Coach Fitzgerald commands loyalty by her own commitment to self and team improvement. She teaches discipline and self-respect to the student-athletes by being commanding yet understanding, intense yet in control. She always has the academic achievement and personal growth of the players foremost in her mind.

She is responsible for the recruiting duties for the Golden Eagles. She has a knack for evaluating hidden talent, seeing the talent in players that other recruiters fail to see. Her expertise in recruiting has brought quality young women to university programs that are self-motivated, academically oriented, and athletically skilled. She is immediately recognized upon entering most high school gyms within a 4 hour radius.

Her first full recruiting class at UC included five freshmen who not only contributed to the Golden Eagles winning season, but who were the impetus behind the wins. The “Fab Five Freshmen” accounted for 50% of the Eagles points, rebounds, and steals. Coach Fitzgerald is responsible for signing back-to-back players in 2002 and 2003 that were honored as WVIAC Rookie of the Year. The past five out of six freshmen recruiting classes have all received a member on the WVIAC All-Freshmen Team, and three of those freshmen have been honored as WVIAC Players of the Week. Her recruiting classes have gained the University of Charleston national recognition as one of the best teams in NCAA II with a national tournament appearance in 2004 and Elite Eight Appearances in 2005 and 2006. She has been able to convince several players who were actively recruited by Division I programs to sign with the University of Charleston, including Lisa Lee, the all time career scoring leader in UC and 2nd in WVIAC history and the first UC Kodak All-American.”

COACH WINN”S COMMENTS:

“Coach Fitzgerald has the uncanny knack to make people around her feel comfortable. She always takes the time to say hello to people and to ask them how they are doing. Her ability to actively listen and show interest in others makes her not only an excellent recruiter but also an outstanding liaison in the community. It is through her networking skills that the coaching staff has been able to create more interest in the UC Women’s Basketball Program, as well as sign highly visible recruits.”
