University of Charleston women's tennis players Bre Moyle and Neha Rana represent UC on the 2007 First Team All-WVIAC squad, the conference announced today. It was the third consecutive first team honor for Moyle (Jr., Las Vegas, NV) while it was the first for Rana (Fr., New Dehli, India).
An unbeaten regular season conference record has allowed West Virginia State to sweep the West Virginia Conference's women tennis individual awards. Star rookie Anna Baronayte is the WVIAC's Player and Freshman of the Year, while head coach John Simms was named the WVIAC Coach of the Year by his peers.
Baronayte was joined on the ten-player All-WVIAC squad by teammates Erica Blakley and Teddi Russell. Charleston, West Liberty State, and Shepherd each had a pair of all-conference honorees. Heather Alcorn and Marissa Fansler are the West Liberty State selections, while Rochelle Lambert and Brittany Moreland are from Shepherd. West Virginia Wesleyan senior Mary Thiebert rounds out the squad.
Baronayte is 21-1 overall and claimed the "A" flight championship at WVU's Martha Thorn Invitational. The St. Petersburg, Russia native finished with a 7-1 #1 singles mark to help the Jackets to the WVIAC regular season title.
Simms has guided West Virginia State to a 15-2 overall record. The Jackets posted their first unbeaten record in league play at 8-0 this season. He previously won WVIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2003 and 2006.
Play in the WVIAC Women's Tennis Championship begins on Friday. The eight-team event will take place at the Watt Powell Annex and Coonskin Park courts in Charleston. The winner of Saturday's championship match earns an automatic bid to this spring's NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament.
