In the opening round of the 2007 WVIAC Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, No. 3 University of Charleston swept Salem International in three games (30-19, 30-22, 30-20) in a match where the Golden Eagles where trying to change things up a little.

“I feel that we played really well tonight and we were working with a new lineup, just trying to see how well it went,” said UC coach Brenda Stevens. “I’m glad to see that the change worked for us, and it’s always reassuring when you can make that change and have the depth to back it up.”

UC struck first in each game and never trailed at any point during the match. Salem was able to tie the third game at 4 but the Golden Eagles then scored seven consecutive points that proved to be too much for the Tigers.

Jami Turrill opened the second game with an ace and the Golden Eagles went on to a 9-2 run that kept them in the lead. Along with Turrill, Katy Skelley came up with a numerous kills that stopped any momentum that the Tigers tried to establish.

For Stevens, it was still a match where her team has a lot to learn.

“We just need to start a little bit tougher in the rest of the matches because the play will only get harder,” she said. “However, it does take a while to get used to the new conditions and I think we adapted fine.”

UC plays No. 6 Glenville State at 7:30 tonight in the quarterfinals.

“The tournament seems to be playing out great and this time it really does look like any team has a chance to go on and win the title,” said Stevens. “Everyone has to play their best on every game to make it to the next round.”

Other teams moving on to the next round include Pittsburgh Johnstown, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Alderson-Broaddus, and West Virginia Wesleyan.

Four matches will be played today, with two starting at 5 p.m. and the others at 7:30. Admission is $5 but college students get in for $2 with an ID card.

All-WVIAC team

UC’s Skelley was named the WVC player of the year after ranking ninth in the conference in kills (3.28 per game) and sixth in blocks (1.08 per game). She was named to the All-WVC first team for the fourth time.

Charleston’s Jami Turrill was named as the WVC volleyball rookie of the year. Turrill averaged 3.59 digs, 2.33 kills and 0.50 blocks.
