By Luke Dooley For The Charleston Gazette Ben Blair’s goal with 28 seconds left gave visiting Davis & Elkins a 2-1 West Virginia Conference men’s soccer win over the University of Charleston Wednesday at Triana Field.
The Senators scored both their goals in the final six minutes to grab the win.
“It was another tough learning block for the team. We had the early lead and lost it in the last minutes,” said UC coach Marty Martinez. “We need to look at what we did and improve for the future.”
UC spent most of the game on defense, giving the Senators seven corner kicks. The match was scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles pushed the ball down the field after a missed shot from a corner kick by the Senators and had a throw-in near the corner. Kyle Klingensmith threw the ball in for UC and after being headed several times, a Senator headed it in for an own goal at 34:11 in the second half.
After the goal, the defense for UC tightened up to protect its 1-0 lead. With 5:45 left in the second half, the Senators had a corner kick in which Ben Jones tracked down the long rebound and scored the first D&E goal.
The game stayed tied until the last seconds when UC had a corner kick.
The kick bounced off the crossbar and the Senators pushed it down to the other side of the field quickly with a two-on-one situation. Cole Johnson drew the keeper out as he passed it to Blair for the goal with 28 seconds left.
UC quickly rebounded from the goal and pushed it to the other end of the field, where a throw-in near the UC corner connected for a shot, but Blair had the save that won the game for the Senators.
The next game for the Golden Eagles (0-6) will be against Lenoir-Rhyne (5-0) at 5 p.m. Friday at Triana Field.
