John White of Saint Peter Chanel High School (Bedford, OH) has signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of Charleston.
White, a 6-foot-4, 210 pound guard-forward was a Honorable Mention All-State selection. He led St. Peter Chanel to an 18-7 record, a North Coast League Championship, a Division 3 District Championship as the Firebirds advanced to the Elite Eight finals. He will be a freshman at the University of Charleston in 2006-07.
White averaged 15.4 points, 3.2 assists, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per contest per game as a senior. He connected on 81 percent of his free throws and was 48 percent from the floor, connecting on 39 percent from behind the 3-point arc.
His career high scoring game was 26 points against Lakewood St. Edwards, and he enjoyed a 15 rebound night against Garfield Heights Trinity.
"I am really excited about continuing my education and my basketball career at the University of Charleston," said White. "Charleston is a beautiful city and has a friendly atmosphere. I'm excited about playing and learning the game of basketball under such a great coach as Greg White. I feel that it is a blessing for me to attend a great school as the University of Charleston."
"John is a steal for our program," said UC head coach Greg White. "As a 6-foot-4, 210 pound 17-year old, he is a multitalented player who can play four positions. He will compete for a starting job as a freshman. He chose UC over numerous colleges and universities. We are thrilled to have him. He has a great feel for the game, a terrific touch and athleticism."
"The University of Charleston is getting a fine young man first and foremost and a tremendous all around basketball player," said Saint Peter Chanel High School head coach Bernie Tarr. "His work ethic and leadership skills will be a great addition to Coach White and the community of Charleston."
