SALISBURY, N.C. — Senior Marquis Brooks scored 10 of his 25 points in overtime as the University of Charleston opened the season with a 102-99 victory over Catawba on Friday night.

Brooks, who was 7-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point distance, also played a key role in the final minutes of regulation.

With the Golden Eagles trailing 85-82 with 2:33 left, he hit two straight free throws and a two-point basket to give his team an 86-85 advantage with 1:23 remaining.

After Catawba (0-1) responded to take an 87-86 lead, UC’s Warren Wallace sank a 3-pointer, but Catawba tied the game at 89 with 36 seconds remaining. Neither team scored again in regulation.

Four other UC players scored in double-figures — Robert Strickland had 17, Wallace and Austin Weatherington added 14 apiece and Jamaal Williams 10. Weatherington also had eight assists. The Golden Eagles sank 35-of-68 from the field.

UC will face Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m. today and will visit Lock Haven (Pa.) Tuesday night.
