UC POSTS WVIAC VICTORY OVER BOBCATS

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston staved off a late rally to edge host West Virginia Wesleyan 84-78 Wednesday at the Rockefeller Center.

Marquis Brooks slammed a breakaway dunk that stretched the Golden Eagles’ lead to 12 with two minutes remaining which appeared to seal a Charleston victory. But the Bobcats scored 12 of the next 16 points and cut the lead to four with two Jared Chafin free throws with 30 ticks left.

Charleston’s John White came up with a steal on Wesleyan’s next possession though, and Warren Wallace and Brooks each made one-of-two free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Robert Strickland led UC with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Six other Golden Eagles scored at least seven points including Austin Weatherington who poured in 12 points, Wallace with 11, Jamaal Williams and Ibrahim Marone tallied eight points apiece, with Anthony Anderson and White contributing seven points each. White also pulled down eight rebounds.

UC improves its record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the WVIAC.

The Golden Eagles will play Miami-Hamilton on Tuesday Dec. 4 at Eddie King Gym. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. in the 2007-08 season home opener for UC.
