UC splits in 2007-08 season opening tourney

The UNiversity of Charleston traveled to North Carolina to participate in the Salisbury Roundball Classic hosted by Catawba on Nov. 16-17 and went 1-1 on the weekend to begin the 2007-08 season.

FRIDAY
UC knocked off the host team on Friday night, tallying a 102-99 victory over Catawba.  Senior Marquis Brooks scored 10 of his team high 25 points in overtime to pace UC.

Brooks made 7-of-14 shots from the field, including 5-of-8 3-pointers. With the Golden Eagles trailing 85-82 with 2:33 left in regulation, Brooks nailed two straight free throws and a two-point bucket to give UC an 86-85 advantage with 1:23 remaining.

Four other UC players scored in double-figures — Robert Strickland had 17, Warren Wallace and Austin Weatherington added 14 apiece and freshman Jamaal Williams had 10 in his collegiate debut. Weatherington also had eight assists.

SATURDAY
The Golden Eagles fell 74-64 to Lenoir-Rhyne despite a strong effort by senior forward Robert Strickland, who posted 21 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks while going 5-6 from the free throw line.

John White chipped in with a double-double, tallying 12 points and 12 rebounds. Marquis Brooks contributed 11 points for UC.

UC will travel to Lock Haven (Pa.) on Tuesday night
