Bumgarner repeats as All-WVIAC choice

University of Charleston senior Michael Bumgarner (Sr., Logan, WV) has been selected to the 2007 All-WVIAC Men's Tennis Team, the conference announced on Thursday, April 19.

Shepherd University's Casey Moser is the West Virginia Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Year for a second consecutive season following a vote by the league's head coaches.  Rafael Cavalcante of West Virginia Wesleyan was selected as the Freshman of the Year, while Wesleyan's Lee Underwood was recognized as the league's Coach of the Year.

Moser, a native of Parkersburg, led the Rams to the WVIAC regular season title.  The junior completed the conference regular season with matching 6-0 records at #1 singles and #1 doubles.

Cavalcante has posted a 14-5 overall record in #1 singles during his first season of collegiate tennis.  The Sao Paulo, Brazil resident also chipped in a 16-2 mark at #1 doubles for the Bobcats.

Underwood claims his second Coach of the Year award after a 13-year wait between honors.  The Elkins native guided Wesleyan to a third place league finish at 6-2 in WVIAC play and a 12-10 overall record.  He owns a career 215-172 record and was named the WVIAC's top coach in 1994 while serving as the mentor at Davis & Elkins.

Five players are repeat selections on the All-WVIAC squad.  In addition to Moser and Bumgarner, Sam DeSimone (West Liberty State), Matthew Stonestreet (Concord), and Justin Thomas (West Liberty State) each were all-conference picks last season.

Other members of the 10-player All-WVIAC team include Cavalcante (WV Wesleyan), Arthur Ebeling (Shepherd), Brandon Gwinn (West Virginia State), Daniel Lobo (WV Wesleyan), and Bodgan Matei (Salem International).

Six all-conference honorees are West Virginia natives.  The Mountain State contingent on the all-star squad is comprised of Bumgarner (Logan), Ebeling (Martinsburg), Gwinn (Belle), Moser (Parkersburg), Stonestreet (Bluefield), and Thomas (Chester).

The WVIAC Men's Tennis Championship continues in Charleston with quarterfinal and semifinal action on Friday.  The championship match, which carries an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, is slated for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Watt Powell Annex courts.
