(BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.VA) Fairmont State's final day total of 305 was good enough to hold off West Liberty State and late charging Charleston as the Falcons earned their first West Virginia Conference men's golf championship since 1992. FSU's 54-hole total of 906 finished two shots ahead of West Liberty and five shots clear of Charleston.
The Falcons' Jon Burnside claimed the individual medalist honor after carding a 74 on Wednesday for a three-day total of three-over par 219. Michael Todd of Charleston shot the day's low round of 69 to end in second place at 222.
Concord's Darcy Donaldson and West Liberty State's Matt Hicks entered the final round tied for the individual lead. Donaldson finished with a 78 on Wednesday that left him in a third place tie with Charleston's Brandon Reece. Hicks' 81 dropped him into a tie for eighth with teammate B.J. Tulodzieski and Wheeling Jesuit's Matt Schwalm.
Wheeling Jesuit's Brett Hambleton ended up fifth at 224 after a final round 71. Fairmont State's William Gautreau and Ohio Valley's J.C. Beecroft were knotted at sixth with matching 225 totals.
Ohio Valley (913) finished fourth in the team standings, while Concord (925) and Wheeling Jesuit (925) tied for fifth.
The champion Falcons placed each of their individuals within the top 25. Justin Caroli tied for 17th at 233, Tyler Franklin posted a 235 for 23rd, and Micah Morrison had a 236 that was good for a 24th place tie.
West Liberty, which suffered the heartbreak of a fifth consecutive second place WVIAC Championship finish, saw David Lane (230) finish in a tie for 13th and Scott Smith (231) was 15th.
Fairmont State earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Region championship at Wheeling's Speidel Golf Club. As many as six West Virginia Conference teams are expected to comprise part of the eight-team field in the May 1-3 event hosted by West Liberty State College.
The All-WVIAC men's golf team and individual honors will be released on Thursday.
