(BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.VA)-Paced by individual leader Jon Burnside's 69, Fairmont State grabbed a six-shot lead over Concord following day one of the WVIAC Men's Golf Championship at Cacapon State Park GC.
The Falcons also received a 74 from William Gautreau, a 77 from Micah Morrison, and a 78 out of Tyler Franklin for a 298 team total. All four are among the top twenty individuals.
Concord's Darcy Donaldson, the top-ranked individual in the East Region, posted the only other sub-par round of the afternoon with a 71. The two-time defending conference champion Mountain Lions also received a 76 from Luke Tonkin, which left him in a tie for tenth.
West Liberty State holds third place at 305, seven strokes out of the lead. The Hilltoppers' Matt Hicks, the 2005 WVIAC Player of the Year, fired a 73 that is good for a third place tie with Charleston's Brandon Reece.
Wheeling Jesuit (307), Charleston (308), and West Virginia State (309) round out the top six. Ohio Valley, the top team in the East Region, is seventh after one day with a 311.
Burnside completed the front side at even-par 36, but posted a three-under 33 on the back nine. The Fairmont sophomore recorded an eagle and five birdies on his way to the afternoon's low round.
Round two of the 54-hole event is slated for Tuesday. Play concludes on Wednesday at the par-72, 6,827-yard course.
