The University of Charleston is the 2007 West Virginia Conference men's golf champion in spite of a late third round rally by Ohio Valley University. The Golden Eagles and Fighting Scots tied with 54-hole totals of 926 after OVU fired a tournament-best 295 in the third and final round.
A second round disqualification would prove costly for Ohio Valley. The fifth and non-counting scores from each round serve as the WVIAC's tie-breaker. The disqualification left OVU without a fifth score for round two and gave UC the championship and an automatic bid to the May 7-9 NCAA Division II East Regional at Wheeling's Oglebay Resort.
Charleston's Michael Todd was the individual medalist after finishing at 223. The senior tied for the tournament's low round with a two-under par 70 during Wednesday's final round. Ohio Valley players finished second and third as Gianni Hild was two shots back at 225. J.C. Beecroft also notched a 70 on Wednesday to end at 226. Concord's Darcy Donaldson and Charleston's Brandon Reece fired matching 227 totals to tie for fourth.
First round tournament leader Concord and defending champion Fairmont State were in the thick of the team race before fading late. Concord ended up in third with a 930 total. Fairmont State's 933 was good for fourth. Shepherd rounded out the top five with a 944 total.
In addition to Charleston, as many as four other WVIAC squads are expected to earn NCAA post-season spots.
The All-WVIAC men's golf squad will be announced on Thursday. Complete results follow:
