2007 WVIAC Tournament preview

Six regionally ranked squads will be in the field when the 2007 WVIAC Men's Golf Championship tees off Monday, April 16 at the par-72 Cacapon State Park GC in Berkeley Springs.  Defending champion Fairmont State, Charleston, Ohio Valley, and Concord rank among the favorites to capture the 54-hole event that concludes on Wednesday.

The University of Charleston is the tournament's top seed.  The Golden Eagles are the second ranked team in the East Region and easily won the recent WVIAC Northern Regional competition by 18 strokes.  Conference Player of the Year contender Michael Todd fired a three-under par 139 to prevail at the Northern Regional and was the runner-up in last season's conference tournament.  Senior Brandon Reece has finished among the top dozen individuals in all three conference sanctioned matches this season.

Fairmont State claimed their first league golf title since 1992 last year by surviving a tight four-way battle.  The Falcons won the Central and Southern Regional competitions in the fall, but have not played their best golf as of late.  Senior Jon Burnside carded a three-over par 219 to take individual medalist honors in last year's league championship at Cacapon.  Teammate Justin Caroli is the lone WVIAC player to compile top-three finishes in the trio of conference events in 2006-07.  Tyler Franklin also has a trio of top-ten standings this season.

2006 East Regional champion Concord looks to make an impact in this season's WVIAC Championship after a disappointing fifth place tie last year.  Senior Darcy Donaldson looks for a strong finish in his bid to repeat as the conference's Player of the Year.  John Ritchey won the Southern Regional back in October.

Ohio Valley stands third in the NCAA Division II East Region rankings.  The Fighting Scots have struggled at times in league events this season, but did place in a third place tie at the recent Northern Regional.  J.C. Beecroft and Greg Lemenchick are among the anchors for OVU.

West Liberty State hopes to climb one spot and end a string of five consecutive second place finishes at the WVIAC Championship.  The Hilltoppers currently own the last ranking spot to earn admission to the NCAA post-season at eighth and look to solidify their position with a strong showing at Cacapon.

Shepherd is the final ranked squad in the NCAA rankings in ninth.  The Rams stand ninth in the regional rankings and hope that Brian Snow and Trevor Hedges can spark a effort that would lift them off the post-season bubble.

West Virginia Wesleyan, Wheeling Jesuit, Salem International, Bluefield State, Glenville State, Davis & Elkins, and West Virginia State round out the field.  Pitt Johnstown golfers will compete in the tournament as individuals.  The Mountain Cats will be eligible for next season's team championship.

Six of the top seven individuals from last season's tournament are in the field.  Donaldson (CU), Reece (UC), Will Gautreau (FSU), and Beecroft (OVU) each were among the contenders during the 2006 event along with Burnside and Todd.

The champion earns an automatic bid to the May 8-10 NCAA Division II East Regional hosted by West Liberty State at Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling.  As many as five WVIAC teams are expected to be a part of that eight-team championship.  Several individuals could also earn invites when the NCAA sets the field.
