INDIANAPOLIS Eighty teams and fifty individuals have been selected to participate in the 2005 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships Super Regionals.
The super regionals will be conducted May 2-4. The sites and teams selected to participate are listed below. Conference automatic qualifiers are indicated in brackets next to the institution’s name. The five super regional tournaments encompass the current ten regions.
The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 17-20 at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia. The finals will be hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Six West Virginia Conference squads are part of this year's East Region field. Conference champion Concord is the third seed, followed by #4 West Liberty State, #5 Ohio Valley, #6 Charleston, #7 Fairmont State, and #8 Shepherd. WVIAC teams comprise six of the eight East Region spots. Fairmont State and Shepherd are making their first ever trips into NCAA regional play.
Three WVIAC individuals also will take part in the tournament. Wheeling Jesuit's Brett Hambleton, Salem International's Nate Hendricks, and West Virginia Wesleyan's Chris Straley are the conference's individuals that were invited by the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Committee. Hambleton and Hendricks are the first players from their schools to appear in an NCAA golf post-season event.
Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. For the 2005 championships, the additional super regional allotments are as follows:
