Charleston Holds Day One Lead at WVIAC Men's Golf Championship
ROANOKE, W.Va Defending champion Charleston is setting the pace following 18 holes at the WVIAC Men's Golf Championship. The Golden Eagles fired a team total of 312 to hold a two-shot over Ohio Valley.
No player broke par at the Stonewall Resort's treacherous Palmer Course. OVU's Paul Raines and West Liberty's Matt Hicks share the individual lead with matching one-over par 73's. Neil Howitt (Davis & Elkins) and Scott Smith (West Liberty State) are a shot back at 74.
West Liberty State stands third in the team race, six shots out of first following Monday's 318. Top-seeded Fairmont State and surprising Davis & Elkins are tied for fourth at 319.
Play in the 54-hole event continues on Tuesday. The event concludes Wednesday with the champion earning an automatic bid into next spring's NCAA Division II East Regional.
