The University of Charleston trails Indiana University (Pa.) by five strokes and Clarion by one stroke after day one of the NCAA East Region Golf Tournament in Jackson, N.J.
The Golden Eagles shot a combined 316, putting them behind only Indiana (311) and Clarion (315). West Liberty State, Shepherd, Concord, Ohio Valley, and Fairmont State — all from the West Virginia Conference, like UC — round out the top eight.
West Liberty’s Matthew Hicks of Sissonville led the individual scorers with a 1-over-par 73.
The trio of Chris McCormick (6-over 78), Brandon Reece (78) and Michael Todd (79) led UC’s charge. Ohio Valley’s Greg Lemenchick and Fairmont State’s Jeffrey Messenger stand two shots behind Hicks, each shooting a 75 on the opening day.
Round two of the tournament will tee off at 8 a.m. today.
