UC Claims WVIAC 2005-06 Commissioner's Cup!

The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced that

the University of Charleston has won the Commissioner's Cup for
the 2005-06 athletic season
. The trophy honors all-around athletic

excellence among its member schools.

The Golden Eagles earned the Commissioner's Cup award to end
a 14-year streak by West Virginia Wesleyan. UC finished with a .500
or record or above in each of their team sports to help win their first
Commissioners' Cup since 1989.

"I congratulate our dedicated coaches and our talented student

athletes,” said UC President, Dr. Edwin Welch. “Their success
is not only in their won-loss records, but also in how they conduct
themselves in the classroom, on the playing site, and in the community.

They represent not only the University but the Charleston community, and I'm proud that they have represented us so well."

The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest
cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points are awarded based on the school's finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC.

Among the highlights of the Golden Eagles 2005-06 athletic season
are the UC women’s tennis team
, which finished the fall season
undefeated and conference champion advancing to the NCAA
tournament this spring; the UC women’s basketball team
that won the
NCAA East Regional Championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite
Eight and finished 31-3; the UC football team
that finished 8-3, a five
game improvement to set a WVIAC record for one season turnaround;
the UC volleyball team
that advanced to the NCAA Great Lakes
regional tournament and finished with a 26-10 mark.
