(CHARLESTON, W.VA)-Wheeling Jesuit (27-4) placed five scorers in double figures as the Cardinals picked up the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a 79-62 pounding of California (26-5). Katie Repicky led WJU with 18 points, while center Sarah Setcavage added 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Point guard Jade Eckleberry had 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the Cardinals. Jenna Johnson tallied a dozen points and Lindsey Piar scored 11. California's Kim Nowakowski led all scorers with 27 points. She also tied Setcavage for rebounding honors with 14 boards. No other Vulcan scored in double figures.
Wheeling Jesuit led 35-31 at intermission and stretched the lead to as many as 20 in the final minutes. WJU shot 53.3 percent from the field in the second stanza as they pulled away. The Cardinals never trailed during the contest's final 38 minutes. Wheeling Jesuit outscored Cal 31-16 in the final eleven minutes to ice the victory.
"We hit a hot streak midway through the second half," said Wheeling Jesuit head coach Joe Key. "We handled their pressure well and got good shots. Our defense picked up too during that stretch."
The Cardinals will meet Charleston in Saturday's first semifinal at 6:00 p.m. The teams have split two meetings in 2005-06. Wheeling Jesuit won 73-69 at home in the regular season, while Charleston returned the favor last week with a 76-63 WVIAC Tournament semifinal victory.
