ANDERSON (SC) 84, WEST LIBERTY STATE 72
March 10, 2006
(CHARLESTON, W.VA)-Anderson University (27-4) used the dynamic duo of LaShonda Chiles and Deidra Langston to sprint past West Liberty State (24-7) 84-72 in the opening game of the NCAA Division II East Region Women's Basketball Tournament.
Chiles poured in a game-high 31 points, while Langston dominated inside with a double-double of 30 points and 12 rebounds. Chiles, a first team All-East Region pick, also dished out ten assists.
The Trojans shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away from a 32-29 halftime lead.
West Liberty State received 19 points from Charity Street. Renee Farina tossed in five three-pointers to end with 17 points. Lena Kalvans chipped in with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Toppers.
The Hilltoppers led much of the first half, including an eight-point bulge at 19-11. However, AU took the lead for good at 26-24 on a Langston bucket.
"It was a great effort by our team," said first year Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "West Liberty is a very talented team because they can attack you in so many ways. We did a good job in the second half limiting them to one shot and getting offense out of our defense."
West Liberty State head coach Lynn Ullom praised the victors in his post-game comments. "Anderson came out in the second half and took it us. Our defense was not very good and they took advantage of it. I've been a head coach for 15 years and Chiles has put together two of the best individual performances that I've ever seen against us."
Anderson, the third seed, advances to tomorrow's semifinals to meet the winner of the Glenville State-Barton clash.
