CHARLESTON 68, GLENVILLE STATE 58
March 13, 2006
(CHARLESTON, W.VA)-Charleston (31-2) claimed the NCAA Division II East Region championship for a second consecutive season with a 68-58 victory over conference rival Glenville State (30-3). The top-seeded Golden Eagles got 22 points and a dozen rebounds from the tournament's Most Outstanding Player Lisa Lee. All-tournament pick Courtney Thomas added 19 points for UC.
Glenville State limited Charleston to a season-low 23 points in the first half as the Pioneers led by a pair at the break. However, UC took control of the contest early in the second half and never trailed from that point.
"You could tell by the shooting percentages that were both teams were fatigued," said Charleston coach Sherry Winn. "Lisa was really able to come out and spark us in the second half."
Denae Dobbins had 26 points and 15 rebounds for Glenville State. Casey Taylor was the only other Pioneer to reach double figures with 11 points. All-region selection Rachel Redick was limited to a season-low five points.
Mandy Ebel added 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench for Charleston. GSC held a 43-42 rebounding edge, but was guilty of 23 tunovers compared to the Golden Eagles' 16 miscues.
#3 Charleston handed #6 Glenville State all three of their losses this season. The Golden Eagles won 85-77 at Glenville during the regular season and 81-59 in the WVIAC Tournament title game.
"I thought tonight was going to be our night," said Glenville State head coach Steve Harold. "They say it's hard to beat a team thre times. UC did what they needed to do tonight. I don't like losing, but they're a good basketball team. They beat us in Glenville, they beat us on a neutral court, and they beat us here. It's frustrating, but they've got bragging rights.
Charleston will face either Drury or Grand Valley State in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Hot Springs, Arkansas on March 22.
