GLENVILLE STATE 94, ANDERSON 76
March 11, 2006
(CHARLESTON, W.VA)-Glenville State (30-2) established a school record with their 30th victory of the season as the Pioneers ran past Anderson (SC) 94-76 in an NCAA Division II East Region semifinal. The victory sets up the first all-West Virginia Conference championship battle in East Region history when #6 GSC clashes with #3 Charleston for the third time this season.
Rachel Redick led Glenville State with 24 points, including 14-of-14 shooting from the foul line. Denae Dobbins narrowly missed a second straight triple-double with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 blocked shots. Casey Taylor added 21 points for GSC.
Anderson was paced by all-region selection LaShonda Chiles, who scored 25 points before fouling out for the first time in her 99-game collegiate career. Chiles was limited to 8-for-27 shooting on the evening from the field. Mikala Fogle-Wilson chipped in with 15 points and Deidra Langston was limited to 11 points.
Glenville State dominated the backboards to a 55-30 turne as Redick contributed eight boards from her guard position. The two-time first team All-WVIAC pick also dished out six assists.
The Pioneers took a 46-38 lead into intermission and built the lead to 20 on three occasions in the second half. GSC connected on 36-of-43 free throws as the Trojans (27-5) allowed a season-high points.
Charleston downed Glenville State 85-77 during the regular season and added a second victory 81-59 in last Saturday's WVIAC Tournament championship contest. The defeats to UC accounted for both of GSC's losses this season.
Glenville State head coach Steve Harold reflected on Monday's matchup: "The committee has done a good job. Both teams have been 1-2 all season in the regional rankings. This is going to be round three. They got us in the first two rounds. Hopefully, it will be better for us in round three."
