Sunday Gazette-Mail

GREENSBURG, Pa. DeRante Hunter ran for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 43-yarder with 3:04 left Saturday afternoon, leading the University of Charleston to a 41-38 West Virginia Conference victory at Seton Hill (Pa.) University.

Hunter, who also threw for three scores, ran 21 yards for a TD earlier in the fourth quarter as UC (7-2, 5-1) rallied for the win.

“We took another step today,’’ said UC coach Tony DeMeo. “It was a big win for us. I’m really proud of the kids. This win shows the maturity of the team. I thought the defense really stepped up at the end of the game.’’

The Golden Eagles had a chance to ice the victory immediately after Hunter’s 43-yard touchdown run as Marcus Young intercepted a Seton Hill pass on the first play after the ensuing kickoff. However, UC wasn’t able to pick up a first down and gave the Griffins a final shot.

Seton Hill (2-5, 2-3) moved to the Eagles 32, but missed a 49-yard field goal try with 49 seconds left.

UC also scored on Hunter’s TD throws of 45 yards to Rusty Taylor, 30 yards to Terrance Spencer and 5 yards to Preston Higdon. Josh Culbertson (20 carries, 80 yards) also scored on a 2-yard run.

Hunter wound up with a net of 76 yards on 14 carries and completed 12-of-13 passes for 219 yards. He was sacked twice and threw no interceptions. Taylor caught four passes for 102 yards and Spencer four for 77.

Seton Hill’s Matt Dowdell connected on 25-of-35 passes for 317 yards and two TDs with two picks. Antwarn Jones ran 26 times for 85 yards and two scores.
