In what he hopes will be an annual salute to his alma mater, Don Tate is again giving away tickets to a University of Charleston football game.
Tate, the CEO of the Fas-Chek grocery chain, already has begun distributing about 36,000 free tickets for UC’s homecoming game against Concord at 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at 18,000-seat University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field.
The ticket giveaway began last year for UC’s game against West Virginia State and drew a crowd of 7,120, which set a school record.
“It was nice last year to see mothers and fathers coming to the game with their children. A lot of families can’t afford to do that,’’ said Tate, who graduated from the school when it was known as Morris Harvey College. “It’s nice to give back to the community.’’
Tate is not only making the tickets available for the asking but is promoting their distribution. He’s sent them to area high schools, middle schools and midget-league teams, as well as the mayors’ offices of Kanawha Valley cities and towns.
“We’ve sent tickets to as far away as Ripley,’’ Tate said Monday.
In addition to the free tickets, Fas-Chek will give away four one-year supplies of Pepsi in a halftime drawing.
Concord, the visiting team, has received 1,000 free tickets. Tickets also will be given away at the gate, and parking will be available at Capitol parking lots.
