T.L. Asbury has been named WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the University of Charleston's 40-7 victory over Concord on Saturday.
Asbury, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound junior from Frazier's Bottom, WV, joins teammates Chris Rotella (Week One) and Mike Williams (Week Five) who have also garnered WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. Xavier Drakeford also won a Special teams Player of the Week award in Week One for the Golden Eagles.
Other UC standouts in Saturday's win and nominees for weekly conference awards were: freshman running back Taylor Jovicic rushed 16 times for 99 yards...redshirt freshman quarterback DeRante Hunter rushed for 95 yards and completed 5 of 9 passes...senior running back Rusty Taylor gained 63 yards on a pair of rushes...freshman running back Nick Lockhart scored on a pair of short rushes...senior defensive back Mike Williams returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown...freshman kicker/punter Wes Sherrill booted 29 and 30 yard field goals and averaged 40.0 yards per punt
WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week (Week 6): T.L. Asbury, University of Charleston: Asbury played a key role as Charleston limited Concord to negative-five rush yards in a 40-7 Golden Eagle victory...Asbury led the UC defense with seven stops and added his league-leading 15th tackle for loss...He also contributed a pair of quarterback hurries as the Golden Eagles remained one of only two unbeatens in WVIAC play.
