Carter, Krutulis Win WVIAC Grid Player of Year Awards
Courtesy of The WVIAC Online.
(PRINCETON, W.VA)-Glenville State wide receiver Antonio Carter and West Virginia Wesleyan linebacker Alan Krutulis have earned top WVIAC grid honors as voted upon by league head coaches. Carter is the Offensive Player of the Year after grabbing 78 receptions for 1066 yards and 10 touchdowns. Krutulis, the conference’s leading tackler with 127 stops, took the Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Shepherd’s Monte Cater was honored by his peers as the WVIAC Coach of the Year following a league championship by the Rams.
Carter, who earned first team All-WVIAC in all three of his seasons at GSC, led the conference in receptions and receiving yards. The 2003 All-American currently stands tenth in Division II in receptions per game. The College Park, GA senior ends his collegiate career third on the conference all-time list with 3172 receiving yards on 236 career catches. His 17-reception day versus Shepherd in October is the third best total in D-II this season.
Krutulis topped the WVIAC with 127 tackles and 23 tackles for loss to become the first Wesleyan player to earn the league's Defensive Player of the Year award. The Stewartsville, New Jersey senior was recognized twice in 2004 as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. The Bobcat standout recorded at least one tackle for loss in each game and notched eight games with ten or more stops. Krutulis closed his collegiate efforts on Saturday with a career-high 22 stops versus West Virginia State. His 12.7 tackles per game average is good for fifth nationally.
Cater led Shepherd to their record-tying eighth WVIAC title during his tenure in the Eastern Panhandle. The 1971 graduate of Millikin University tied Joe Bartell (West Liberty) for second on the all-time WVIAC victory list with 118 wins after the Rams completed a 7-3 mark. Cater ran his overall mark to 149-90-2 in 24 seasons as a head coach. He is 118-67-1 in 18 years at Shepherd.
Only five players were repeat first team selections from the 2003 All-WVIAC squad. Glenville State defensive back Lamont Howard is the lone two-time honoree from the defensive side of the ball. Carter, along with quarterbacks Marc Kimes (WV Wesleyan) and Joey Conrad (Glenville State), are back from last season’s top all-conference squad. Shepherd running back Alex Herbert, the WVIAC scoring leader, is the final repeat selection.
Conference champion Shepherd led all teams with seven first team picks. Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan each had six selections on the top squad. Concord recorded five, followed by Glenville State with four. Kanawha Valley neighbors West Virginia State and Charleston each finished with a pair of honorees.
Ten different states, plus the District of Columbia, were represented among the home states of first team selections. West Virginia and Virginia each produced seven players on the list. Four hailed from Maryland and Ohio, while three claim Florida as home.
RB Chris Moore, a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Award, and K Mike Zimmerman are the initial University of Charleston selections to the all-conference first team since 1954 when the school was known as Morris Harvey. West Virginia Wesleyan all-around threat T.R. Dues, a native of South Charleston, was named twice to the first team as a kick returner and as a utility back.
