Scholarships

The University of Charleston has over 180 permanently endowed scholarships, which provide a perpetual source of scholarship aid for our students.  Endowed scholarships enable UC to attract talented students and provide them with the financial means to experience the benefits of a private liberal arts education.

The money in each endowed scholarship fund is invested by the University, and only the income each year is distributed to a student chosen on the basis of criteria set out by the scholarship donor.  The corpus of the fund remains intact, which makes an endowed scholarship “the gift that keeps on giving.”

A scholarship may be named in honor of the donor, a loved one, or a favorite professor.  Many are designated for a student from a particular geographic area or pursuing a certain degree.  Some donors endow a scholarship with a single gift; other scholarships are established over a period of up to five years.  In the latter case, the scholarship is considered “in progress” and no distributions are made until it reaches the endowment level.

Each year, the University hosts an event designed to bring scholarship donors and scholarship recipients together.  Our donors enjoy seeing the effects their gifts have had on the lives of our students, and our students appreciate the opportunity to say “thank you.”

The University of Charleston recognizes the importance of endowed scholarships and is constantly seeking to expand the number of scholarships available to help students at UC.  We express our gratitude to all who have endowed a scholarship in support of our talented students.  Scholarships change lives.
