UC Admission - Learning Your Way

Description of the "Learning Your Way" academic approach at University of Charleston West Virginia."

Learning Your Way

So, what exactly do we mean by "Learning Your Way?" It isn't just a phrase, or a fancy marketing tagline. It's real. It's how academics work here. It's a unique chance for you, the student, to take charge of your education.

Here's how it works

The "Learning Your Way" promise encourages each student to explore all the learning options available. So, a UC student might:

  • Mix traditional classes with internships;
  • Construct a portfolio to demonstrate his/her achievements and knowledge;
  • Create his or her own Independent Learning Plan (with the approval of faculty, of course).
  • Tailor a curriculum to fit specific career goals, for example, by adding study abroad or heading a research project.

It's a way for motivated students to direct their academic path. It's engaged learning. It combines book knowledge with other kinds of learning experiences, especially Service Learning. Every major includes some type of opportunity to serve the community through volunteer work. All along the way, UC faculty help students select options appropriate for specific outcomes, and assess the level of demonstrated achievement.

"Learning Your Way" is a partnership between the University of Charleston and motivated, responsible students. It's a sharing of knowledge. A team effort.  A dynamic education.

Measurable benefits
