Welcome to the University of Charleston's First Year Webpage. We are committed to our students and do everything we can to help them succeed. The first year at UC is both challenging and exciting. The first year curriculum is dynamic! You will be developing your liberal learning skills in communication, creativity, critical thinking, ethical practice, citizenship, and science while you are moving through your initial college experience. Because you will demonstrate your new skills in a portfolio, you will be able to earn additional credits at your own pace. In short, the Liberal Learning Outcomes add flexibility for the student who desires it and a more traditional approach for those who feel more comfortable with that.
We offer Independent Learning Plans to those students who want to prove competence in their own way, or move ahead at a brisker pace. Through the option of an Independent Learning Plan, for example, the student who has experiences in international travel can meet the Global Perspectives outcome drawing on their experiences as source material. A highly motivated and focused student can use the Independent Learning Plan option to tailor his or her own personal curriculum to meet their individual needs.
Meeting the needs of students and the community is the focus of the Service Learning component of a UC education. We understand that today's students want to serve and learn. The University of Charleston makes service learning a part of every major. At UC you can be a part of a group of music students working with members of the Boys and Girls Club, join interior design students building Habitat for Humanity housing or participate in other hands-on opportunities to serve and learn. Look around; catch the feeling of excitement and reward that comes from service learning.
