Understanding Financial Aid

There are many types of financial aid, and different levels of eligibility. Loans are funds that must be repaid, usually after graduation. Scholarships and grants are different, but neither has to be repaid: they're free money! Work-study is another option where you work on campus and earn a paycheck as you would at any job.

Students interested in being considered for financial aid must complete the application procedure each year. Required application documents include the

  • University of Charleston Financial Aid Application,
  • Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), and
  • a copy of the previous year's tax return.

All the Forms You Need are available online.

All application materials must be received by March 1 for full consideration for the following academic year. Any applications received after the March 1 deadline will be given consideration only if funds are available. West Virginia applicants must file the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 for consideration for the West Virginia Higher Education Grant. Academic awards may have earlier application deadlines. Institutional and federal campus-based funds may be awarded to students carrying 6 or more hours per semester. Audited courses will not be included for determining financial aid eligibility.
