What UC Nursing Graduates do...

Two graduates of the class of 1990 completed Nurse Anesthetist school together, while a third classmate completed a Family Nurse Practitioner program the same year.

A recent BSN graduate combines her prior experience in corrections and law enforcement with nursing as the Medical Director for the WV Regional Jail System.

As a certified Enterostomal Therapist, Connie helps clients and nurses develop competence in personal and professional care of ostomys.

After graduation and a variety of work experiences, Pam went to graduate school and joined the nursing faculty at the University of Charleston.

"I came to UC after being at a large university for a year, not knowing exactly what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I found the faculty and staff at UC, especially the nursing faculty, genuinely concerned about my feelings and frustrations. But the time I graduated from UC, I felt like part of the family. So when the opportunity to return to this caring family-like environment came to my attention, I grabbed it. It has been one of the best decisions I ever made!

After leaving UC I truly felt prepared to a nurse. Going to graduate school was something I knew I would do even while I was still in undergraduate school at UC. I felt in many ways I was more prepared than some students from other nursing schools.

If you choose nursing 'what you put into it is what you get out of it'. If you put your heart into your nursing practice, then you will be heartily rewarded in the big scheme of things."

As a recent graduate, Mary practices in a rural hospital in her home community, rotating between the emergency department, surgery and medical-surgical units. As a well-rounded professional nurse, Mary is certified in advanced life support techniques for adults and children.

"The University of Charleston was a springboard that allowed me to jump into life with the skills necessary to survive. Thanks again UC!"

Class of 1997

Angie completed a graduate nursing program after graduating from UC and now practices as a Family Nurse Practitioner in a free clinic.

"Nursing is the most 'well paid' profession around, you are 'paid' every time you see a patient get well. After attending four colleges in the area, I've found UC is the perfect educational environment: large enough to offer a broad, multi-cultural college experience yet small enough to give low professor-student ratios, yielding a very personal, close-knit feel to your nursing education."

Angela Settle, RN, MSN
Class of 1993

Raetta was already an RN from an AD program when she entered the RN-BSN track at UC. She had worked several years on a medical-surgical unit of a local medical center. She graduated from a Nurse Practitioner Program and is employed in a rural health clinic.

"UC was a very positive experience for me, both personally and professionally. The educational and clinical components of the BSN curriculum laid the foundation that has enabled me to obtain a Masters of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner degree."

Raetta Baker, RN, MSN
Class of 1995

"I am very excited about my new job. My duties include Clinical Research Coordinator, OR Assistant & Patient Care Coordinator. I find this job to be very challenging and rewarding and am currently involved in two national research studies. This is everything I went to nursing school for! I am so thankful for everything I learned at UC.
