Nursing Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

Students must gain general admission to the University of Charleston. Available faculty and clinical facilities limit the number of students enrolled in the program. Applicants in all categories must be academically and psychologically admissable or re-admissible.

To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program the applicant must:

  1. Meet the general admissions requirements of the University of Charleston.
  2. Have a minimum high school grade point average of 3.0 with ACT composite of 21 or better with 19 or higher in all sub scores; or SAT minimum composite of 1000 with 460 in math and 470 in verbal; or a GED overall score of 50 with a minimum of 45 on each test, on the original test, or a score of 2250 on the re-centered test.
  3. Have two units of high school math, one of which must be algebra, and two units of high school science. Chemistry with lab is strongly recommended.
  4. Submit evidence of a satisfactory physical examination.
  5. Submit the nursing application online.

All qualified applicants will be reviewed for admission to the program during the last week of January each year using a point system. Those applicants with the highest total points will be admitted to the program.

Transfer Students
Students seeking to transfer from other institutions will be evaluated on an individual basis and generally must meet University requirements which stipulate that credits presented for transfer must be from an accredited college and are subject to review in light of University admissions requirements and policies. The Department of Baccalaureate Degree Nursing reserves the right to evaluate all nursing courses for transfer. A 2.75 college grade point average is required to be eligible for admission to the nursing program.

Eligibility
Students not meeting grade point average or ACT/SAT requirements will be considered for admission to the BSN Program after earning 2.75 or better grade point average on 12 or more credits at the University of Charleston.

Admission to Summer Nursing Sequence
In order to better serve individuals who are making career changes, there are a limited number of openings for students to take Health Science 101 and 102 during summer school. Space is limited and varies with freshman class attrition. Preference is given to students with previous baccalaureate degrees. A point scale will be used to evaluate college grade point average and total number of credits. Transcripts will be evaluated by the BSN Department Chair for specific course work necessary for this progression sequence in order to avoid prerequisite conflicts.
