Complete the Nursing Application

Students must gain admission to the University of Charleston prior to applying for admission to the Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Applicants need to complete a University of Charleston Admissions application and a Nursing Application. The clinical facilities and the number of faculty available limit the number of students enrolled in the BSN program. Applicants must be academically admissible or re-admissible.
Student applications will be reviewed using a point schedule that weighs GPAs, course work, and TEAS scores when qualified applicants exceed the number of students that the program can accommodate.
Admission into the BSN Program occurs by application prior to the beginning of the sophomore course sequence. A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater and completion of the course work listed for the freshman year level is required for admission into the BSN Program and enrollment into the sophomore year level nursing classes. The Program Application process includes the original nursing application and submitting all other documents for program admission.
Program Application information may be obtained from the HSCI Administrative Assistant — Riggleman Hall 400-B, telephone 304.357.4855 or the BSN Program Chair — Riggleman Hall 406-B, telephone 304.357.4837.
BSN applicants must:
- Submit a copy of a UC Program Evaluation or transcripts demonstrating a grade point average of 2.75 or greater on completed freshman-level BSN Program course work
- Complete and submit a BSN Application for Admissions
- Complete and submit a Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), a nationally standardized nursing entrance exam that allows students to demonstrate academic competence in Reading, Math, Science, and English. Students wanting to prepare for the TEAS exam prior to testing may order a study guide from www.atitesting.com. TEAS exams are scheduled by the University of Charleston Learning Support Services in Riggleman Hall 129 and may be contacted at 304.357.4931. Scores below standard level require remediation and retesting. Students may schedule a retest as needed.
- Submit a copy of a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Card.
- Submit a copy of a current negative PPD tuberculosis test result or chest x-ray result.
- Submit a copy of laboratory results for mumps, rubella, Rubeola, measles, Varicella, and Hepatitis B serum titers demonstrating immunity. If any titer shows non-immunity then also submit evidence of receiving vaccination against that specific disease. Students accepted with the initial vaccine in the series, who do not have titers indicating immunity, will be accepted conditionally. Those conditionally admitted are expected to present evidence of continuing the series of vaccines required to establish immunity on schedule and subsequently to present the evidence of a titer confirming immunity. Students who do not meet these continuing responsibilities are not eligible for clinical labs in the University’s collaborating agencies and thus cannot pass the nursing classes required.
- Submit a copy of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if you are a student for whom English is a second language with a minimum score of 560.
- Submit a copy of a certified background check from www.CertifiedBackground.com.
- Submit a copy of a current documented flu vaccination.
- Submit a letter of good standing and transcripts of course work and standardized testing if seeking transfer from a previous nursing program. The Department of Baccalaureate Nursing faculty reserves the right to evaluate all transfer credits. Students requesting transfer credit into the Baccalaureate Nursing Program from other Higher Learning Commission accredited nursing programs will have all transcripts evaluated and advanced placement may be awarded. Additional departmental testing may be required to determine the student's retention level and placement. The BSN Program faculty will assess competency levels for advanced placement in the program.
Completed materials should be submitted to:
Attention: HSCI Administrative Assistant
University of Charleston
2300 MacCorkle Avenue, SE
Riggleman Hall 400-B
Charleston, WV 2530
Students seeking to transfer from other institutions will be evaluated on an individual basis and generally must meet University requirements which stipulate that credits presented for transfer must be from an accredited college and are subject to review in light of University admissions requirements and policies. The Department of Baccalaureate Degree Nursing reserves the right to evaluate all nursing courses for transfer. A 2.75 college grade point average is required to be eligible for admission to the nursing program.
