Interior Design
Program and Activities

The four-year Interior Design Bachelor of Arts curriculum is an outcomes-based program in the Humanities Department of the Division of Arts and Science.  Graduation requirements include successful completion of liberal learning outcomes of communication, ethics, science, citizenship, creativity, and critical thinking in an 80 credit hour requirement of Art, Design, and Interior Design courses and 41 credit hours of liberal learning courses.  See program course sequence.  Liberal learning outcomes embedded in the Interior Design curriculum facilitate students studying an additional related discipline as a minor or associate degree.

In addition to addressing adaptive re-use of public and private space, students develop and publicly display design concepts for the University’s International Festival and for the greater Charleston community through a senior capstone course.  Students also experience real-world design by participating in annual trips to major metropolitan design centers, by attending professional speaker series and field experiences, and by working at an approved, national internship site.  Students experience a reinforced learning environment by:

  • Meeting course and curriculum outcomes for progression in a sequentially developed curriculum
  • Developing proficient technical skills with the latest computer software for the building arts
  • Interacting with design resources, experiences, and professionals
  • Participating in portfolio reviews throughout the curriculum in preparation for the Senior Exhibit
