Faculty Joellen A. Kerr Teaches courses related to History of Art, Architecture, and Furnishings; Interior Textiles, Fabrics, and Finishes; Architectural Materials and Structures; Architectural Interior Lighting; Building and Safety Codes for Interior Environments; and Business Policies and Procedures for the Interior Designer. Kerr has practiced in the commercial field of interior design but devotes the major part of her time and energy to academia and helping students prepare for the professional world of designing interior environments. With successful completion of coursework and field experiences, she believes the University of Charleston graduate is prepared to analyze, plan, and design space which affects an individual's general sense of well being. Kerr was recently selected to participate in the Fallingwater Summer Teacher Residency program in American Architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright's 20th Century masterpiece and maintains membership in American Society of Interior Design, Interior Design Education Council, Inc., and West Virginia Interior Design Coalition. "Our program is committed to students who have little or no previous art and design training. We stay abreast of the trends, alert to changing needs, and devoted to helping you develop as a whole designer. We constantly work from the principle of 'Take advantage of every opportunity' and this is evident with the jobs our students are getting." Tracy Wasinger Teaches elements and principles of design for works of art as well as for the built interior environment. Wasinger teaches basic design theory in the Design Foundations course and reinforces the concept in interior environments in the Introduction to Interior Design and upper level studio courses, which explore interior residential and commercial spaces. She also teaches the technical aspect of Interior Design through Architectural Drawing courses and the human behavioral concept in a Design Process course. Design elements and principles, architectural drawing, and color theory interests support the Interior Graphics course, which prepares students to present ideas and design solutions in an attractive and communicative presentation. The changing needs of humans and interior spaces require continuing education and exposure and Wasinger has completed the National Council of Interior Design Qualification examination, a measurement for all licensed and registered interior designers. "The philosophy of our program is to expose the students to all aspects of design theory and practices. We start with a design base, which then allows the students to develop creatively. This process prepares them for the careers they are seeking and obtaining." Adjunct Professionals
