Field Experiences
Students have a variety of service learning experiences in real-world settings as an integrated component of their coursework. For example, in EDUC 204 Inclusion, which is required of all Education majors, students assist in a public school inclusion classroom as well as Special Olympics Inclusion Games.

By the time students graduate, they have field experiences in urban, rural, low socio-economic, general education, and special education settings. Click the chalkboard to see links to public school websites.

Click the Special Olympics logo for more information about the games.

Community Outreach and Partnerships

  • African American Read In African-American Read In Day
Each February, the University of Charleston’s (UC) Education Program partners with Glenwood Elementary to celebrate African-American Read In Day. UC’s education majors select African-American literature and read aloud to students in grades kindergarten through 5th. Reading activities are implemented in order to deepen students’ understanding of concepts and topics shared during the read aloud. Students are always enthusiastic and actively participate in all facets of the celebration. This was evident in 2008 when one education major read Follow the Drinking Gourd and sang the words to the song. The students kept saying, “Sing it again, sing it again!”
  • Education Alliance Partnership
University of Charleston’s Education Program has established a partnership with Education Alliance to assist local elementary, middle, and secondary schools in improving their students’ attendance rates and academic achievement. This results-based partnership allows UC education majors to tutor and mentor students in partnership schools each semester.
  • Adaptive Physical Education at Kanawha City Elementary
Students taking the class Adaptive Physical Education take part in a field experience at Kanawha City Elementary School. While there they work with students who have a range of disabilities.
