Yearbook Disclaimer

The 1962 Harveyan was so disliked by the administration (Leonard Riggleman, President, and Marshall Buckalew, Vice-president) that a disclaimer was pasted inside the front cover of each copy. Neither the 1961-62 issues of the Comet, nor the Faculty Minutes for the year contain any reference to the controversy. An editorial on a different matter in the September 13, 1963 issue of the Comet, does make reference to the "controversial '62 Harveyan."

Disclaimer posted inside front cover of 1962 Harveyan:

Dear Reader:

The 1962 edition of The Harveyan represents such a radical departure from the previous editions that a brief explanatory statement may be in order.

It should be borne in mind that, as the title page suggests, the edition is presented as a farce. To interpret it in any other light would result in erroneous impressions regarding the College's standards and the values cherished by its personnel.

The Harveyan Board is not particularly proud of this edition nor does it feel that this type of presentation is the most effective or desirable. It is evident that many important phases of the life of the College during 1961-62 have been overlooked. It is hoped that the reader will remember that this is a student publication and it seems academically fashionable to permit students a high degree of freedom in such publications.

It may be, however, that in spite of its obvious imperfections, the 1962 edition has made a contribution to higher education. It appears to offer evidence that four years of college attendance cannot guarantee the achievement of a reasonable degree of social maturity by a given student.
