Past Student Newspaper Editors

Included here are the names of those persons listed as "Editor-in-Chief," "Managing Editor," or "Editor." During academic year 1936-37 a "Board of Editors" controlled the production of the paper. During 1983-84 year another "Board of Editors," the faculty of the Mass Communications Department, controlled production, though students reported and wrote and the stories.

World War II, the move of the campus to Charleston, and student apathy have at times prevented publication of a student paper. The first student newspaper was published in March, 1920, and was produced as a monthly, for which students paid a $1 subscription. The title page of the first issues notes that the "... work Comet is not used in the ordinary sense ... a heavenly body ... but our Comet is to be one of the visitors which has its circuit of recurrence." Yearbooks for the academic years 1927-28 through 1930-31 list the Comet as active, and state names for the editors, but no copies of those papers have survived.
