Football Coaches
Football flourished at Morris Harvey College from 1904 until the spring of 1957. Early teams played high school and club teams, some seasons playing only one recorded game. Some seasons saw the reign of more than one head coach.
By the 1950's, MHC teams were strong, playing in four major bowl games during the first half of the decade. The program was not, however, financially viable, and the institution's subsidization of its athletic program was listed as a major weakness by the North Central Association, the body from which it was seeking accreditation.
During the self-study portion of the accreditation process in the 1956-1957 academic year, the Athletic Committee came to the conclusion that Morris Harvey could no longer support this expensive sport. The decision to end the football program was severely criticized by students, alumnae, and community fans.
