    Erma Byrd Art Gallery

Once home to a crowded, dimly lit library packed with study tables, furniture and stacks of books, the Erma Byrd Gallery is now an expression of aesthetic spirit and creative vision. The gallery is currently home to 155 pieces of art created exclusively by West Virginia women artists. Free and open to the public, the Gallery is an asset not only to the University, but to the community as well. It can be rented by the public through the University’s catering office – and transformed into a lovely setting for dinners, luncheons, parties and receptions. It is a very popular setting for weddings as well. The main floor also provides much needed meeting space for the school. The technology available is impressive – screens and projectors can be lowered from the ceiling, and window covers pulled down at the push of a button. A large catering kitchen occupies the southeast corner. The Art Deco architecture, incredible views, and soul-soothing atmosphere of the Gallery are a work of art in themselves. It is also a tribute to the dedicated work of so many and the vision of Dr. Janet Welch, wife of UC President Edwin Welch, whose tireless work made the Gallery a reality. We hope you will enjoy the Gallery, its art and its place in UC as a true work of heart.

“…my family and I are grateful for your vision and determination in creating this radiant gallery. Your dream is a beautiful and lasting tribute, not only to my beloved Erma, but to all women in our state who aspire to create art.” The late Senator Robert C. Byrd in a letter to Janet Welch
