University of Charleston School of Pharmacy Alums Honored by West Virginia Pharmacists Association


(Charleston, WV) – University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) Alumni members Dr. John H Hudson (Class of 2011) and Dr. Matt Rafa (Class of 2010) were statewide award winners at the 110th West Virginia Pharmacists Association (WVPA) annual convention in Charleston, WV on Saturday, September 23.

Hudson is a recipient of the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award, which recognized his excellence and outstanding contributions to the WVPA and his community, while Rafa was the recipient of the Generation Rx Champion Award for demonstrating specific efforts to prevent drug abuse and diversion.

Hudson currently serves as a clinical pharmacy specialist in the areas of gastroenterology and infectious disease with Marshall Internal Medicine with an emphasis on hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and rheumatoid arthritis. 

Rafa, a Wheeling, WV native, is currently a pharmacy manager for Kroger Pharmacy. Rafa is also the founder of Home for Opioid Prevention, Education, and Support (HOPES) which serves as a safe and welcoming home to address the health and social condition of the current opioid epidemic.

“The UCSOP community is proud of our alums’ achievements,” said Dr. Michelle Easton, UCSOP Dean.  “Both John and Matt were exceptional students. They were heavily involved in our community outreach efforts, and were seen has having unlimited potential. It is heartwarming to see them be recognized as state leaders by their peers less than a decade from their graduation from our program.”
