(Charleston, WV) – High school and college undergraduate students from West Virginia and surrounding states are invited to participate in the 2019 ExRx (Experience Pharmacy) Boot Camp at the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP). The camp runs from Tuesday, June 18 through Friday, June 21, 2019. This is the fifth year that UCSOP has sponsored the camp.
The four-day schedule of activities will be led by the expertise of pharmacy faculty, staff and students. Participants will experience hands-on immersive experiences in the UCSOP compounding, IV and simulation labs. In addition, pharmacy faculty and staff will provide instruction in courses like Pharmacy 101, Medicinal Plants, Pharmacogenomics and History of Pharmacy.
“The ExRx Boot Camp is an eye-opener to the profession of pharmacy that offers a variety of insights from different specialties within the field,” said Emily Chattin, ExRx Boot Camp Alum and Member of the UCSOP Class of 2022. “The camp provided me an opportunity to network with other prospective pharmacy students, in addition to UCSOP Faculty, Alumni, and Current pharmacy students. The camp offers a welcoming environment to expand your mind to all the possibilities that the pharmacy profession holds.”
Participants will also receive advice on preparing and applying for college and pharmacy school, as well as, learn about various career paths by partaking in activities such as career roundtables and mock interviews.
“ExRx Boot Camp offers valuable one-on-one interaction with School of Pharmacy faculty and staff to those interested in a career in pharmacy,” said Jamie Bero, UCSOP Director of Student Affairs and the bootcamp’s organizer. “The experience is rewarding for not only the campers, but for the faculty and staff, too.”
The cost of the camp is $125 per student and covers meals, activities and lodging in UC residence halls. Evening activities will include a scavenger hunt, ice cream social, a service project, s’mores on the riverbank and a STEAM art activity.
