Campers Complete University of Charleston School of Pharmacy ExRx Summer Boot Camp

7/5/2018

(Charleston, WV) – High school and college undergraduate students from West Virginia and surrounding states were honored on Friday, June 22, 2018 in a closing celebration for the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) ExRx Boot Camp.

The camp ran from Tuesday, June 19 through Friday, June 22, 2018. This is the fourth year that UCSOP has sponsored the camp.

The four-day schedule of activities was led by the expertise of pharmacy faculty, staff and students.  Participants practiced hands-on immersive experiences in the UCSOP IV, compounding and simulation labs. In addition, pharmacy faculty provided instruction in courses such as Pharmacy 101, Medicinal Plants, Pharmacogenomics, and History of Pharmacy. Participants also received advice on preparing and applying for college and pharmacy school, and had the opportunity to learn about various career paths within the profession by partaking in activities such as career roundtables and mock interviews.

Evening activities included an Instagram scavenger hunt, ice cream social, an art service project, and s’mores on the riverbank.

Camper Mackenzie Blackford and current Frostburg State University student stated, “I absolutely loved the ExRx Boot Camp! I loved every activity, especially learning about how many different fields a pharmacist can work in. I felt the week was very informative and gave me the knowledge and resources I need to better my chances to get into pharmacy school.”

“ExRx Boot Camp offers invaluable insight into the pharmacy profession and is a rewarding experience for the campers and for all UCSOP faculty and staff involved,” said Dr. Susan Bissett, Assistant Dean for Professional and Student Affairs. “The closing ceremony is especially fulfilling because we get to see a weeks-worth of learning come to fruition for these campers when they receive their certificates of completion.”
