• Pre-Professional



    The University of Charleston offers a Pre-Professional Concentration designed to facilitate admissions to and success in professional programs, including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary medicine, Physician Assistant and the School of Pharmacy. The Pre-Professional Concentration is available in both the Biology and Chemistry programs, and the curriculum also serves students in the Traditional Pre-Pharmacy Concentration.

    UC provides many opportunities for hands-on learning above and beyond the core Biology curriculum to set students apart from other programs. Some examples include:

    • Analyzing medical case studies
    • Reading EKGs
    • Learning suturing techniques
    • Formal MCAT/PCAT/GRE reviews led by program faculty
    • Facilitated small group study
    • Interview training including mock interviews with biology faculty members
    • Biomedical research opportunities through WV-INBRE
    • Faculty-prepared study guides for MCAT/GRE
    • Free sessions on study skills and test-taking techniques
    • Weekly distribution of Verbal/Reading worksheets designed to improve MCAT/GRE scores
    • Epsilon Chapter of Chi Beta Phi science honorary and a campus chapter of the American Chemical Society


    The Department of Natural Science and Mathematics offers formal study for pre-admission tests for professional school. These sessions are provided without charge and are presented by the faculty. The Department also encourages small group study and provides study material to such groups.
